Answer

There are some symbols which cannot be used when naming a root directory path or a project in SCIEX OS software. Do not use these characters: \ / : ; * ? " < > = |

If an invalid character is used when naming a root directory path in SCIEX OS software in the Add Root Directory window, a tool tip callout appears, notifying the user that a non-permitted character is being used (first screenshot). The characters listed in the SCIEX OS software tooltip are almost identical to those listed above, except the forward and reverse slashes are excluded. For SCIEX root directory names, the forward and reverse slashes should not be used as part of the name because they function to separate folders in a pathway.

If an invalid character is used when creating a new folder in Windows File Explorer, a Windows tool tip callout appears (second screenshot), but this list does not include the semicolon or the equals sign. These characters can generally be used to create a folder in Windows, but they are not permitted in the names of folders used by SCIEX OS software. If a semicolon or equals sign is added to the name and a user browses to a folder with these symbols in the name via SCIEX OS software, the user is prompted with the tooltip and is prevented from selecting these folders as new root directories.

Overall, the following characters cannot be used to name a project folder or a root directory:

  • \ / : ; * ? " < > = |
  • Technically, "/" and "\" can be part of a root directory pathway but can't be part of the actual folder name within said pathway.
